How I got in to reading and book recommendations for beginners

How I got in to reading + book recommendations

I was never an avid reader. Oh, I hated reading. When I was young, my school had a library period and we were required to read a book for 45 minutes. Then just before the "class" ended, we were required to talk about what we've read so far. I dreaded it. Back then, I couldn't read to save my life 🤣 I used to think it was the most boring thing anybody could do.

But then one day, it all changed. As the bell rang for library class, I made my way through our cupboard and skimmed through the number of books that were displayed in front of me. I'd absent-mindedly picked up a book called "Are You There, God? It's Me Margaret" by Judy Blume. As I walked back to my seat, I couldn't help but figure out how I was going to stay awake for the next 45 minutes.

The next thing I knew, the bell was ringing, class was up and I was still there unable to put the book down. Judy Blume converted me into a reader.

All it takes is one book. One book that you can relate to. That's all.

The story was and still is very close to my heart. It's a book that I could relate to because it was about Margaret and her coming of age story. It's all about periods, boobs and all the other stuff that girls go through during puberty. You know what I mean. I bet when you were younger, you'd talk to your bff's about these stuff too right? I considered this book a gem because to me, that book was controversial. There were so many stuff in the story that I couldn't possibly have the guts to talk about with my strict, conservative and Asian parents. iykyk

So, that's how it all started. Today, I read like there's no tomorrow.

Here's a few of the books I'd recommend if you're a beginner and want to get into reading. I enjoyed them so much, I hope you'll enjoy them too!

Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella: This is the first of the book series and I've read the succeeding books as well! Sophie Kinsella's style of writing here is so funny and feels like the character is talking to you.

Crossfire Series by Sylvia Day: The Crossfire series is similar to Fifty Shades of Grey. But, this one is 10x better. If you wanna give a go at erotic novels, Sylvia Day's books are one to read!

Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter by Adeline Yen Mah: A memoir/autobiography of Adeline's suffering when she was a child. One of the books I absolutely enjoyed as this was the first book I read that was a true story.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig: A book that I read last year which talks about alternate timelines based on the life decisions we make. An eye opener for me and it's made my belief about parallel universes even stronger.

Verity by Colleen Hoover: A psycho-thriller book. This book is so hard for me to talk about because I feel like once I start, I'm just going to spoil everything! If you're into psycho thriller stories, you can start reading this!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid: Evelyn is a Hollywood icon back in the 50's and after being in the show business for decades, she finally reveals the reasons behind her 7 husbands. One of my current favorite books! Just beautiful!

Circe by Madeline Miller: Greek Mythology about the Goddess, Circe. If you're a woman, read this. That is all.
