Book Review: The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

Book Review: The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

"First, there was trust. Then, there was betrayal. You cannot have one without the other. You cannot be betrayed by someone you do not trust."

Albeit a beautiful quote, I definitely feel quite the opposite about the book. Set between two alternating timelines - the 1700's and the present - told from the point of view of 3 persons. An extremely underwhelming read for me.

Not gonna lie, I picked up the book because the cover caught my attention. Very appealing, don't you think? Unfortunately, I needed more. This book tried so hard to intertwine two stories together...but in my opinion, it just didn't work out. The whole time I thought maybe there was a magical connection between the characters in the past and the present...like a time travel thing or maybe they were ancestors or something...but nope. I mean, considering there was "magick" involved in the story...but then again, I guess not.

Both story lines had so much potential and honestly, I feel like they could have done better on its own. One book for the present day story, and another book about the apothecary. The apothecary itself was very much untapped. It had a lot of soul but it just held back. I had so many questions and there were so many loopholes left to be uncovered.
