Book Review: Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado

“You never live with a woman, you live inside of her"

A book filled with short stories about violence against women. Machado takes a fantasy/magical realism approach to describe the emotional toll one goes through after/during a traumatic experience. I think that the writing is just incredible. She gave voice to - if not all - some of the women who has experienced some sort of abuse in their lives.

This book only proved to show that we are extraordinarily complex creatures and we all have our own ways of dealing and coping with trauma. I guess you could even say, that sometimes it's very unconventional. But that's okay.

Really enjoyed this book but, while I did mention earlier that this contains short stories, there is one chapter called "Especially Heinous" which was a drag to read in my opinion. I decided to skip that part, finish the rest and went back to it. Other than that, I think this is very much worth your time.
