Book Review: I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella

I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella

It took me a few months before I finally finished this book. What a drag! Suffice to say, I didn't enjoy it at all.

Fixie Farr, as her name suggests, loves to fix things. While at a coffee shop, she saves a stranger's laptop from the brink of extinction. Seb, the handsome acquaintance, thanks her by writing an IOU on a coffee sleeve. In other news, Ryan, an old flame of hers returns from LA, jobless and takes advantage of the way she feels for him. Fixie has never been the one to cash in on any favors but she musters the courage to go to Seb and help her get Ryan a job.

I found the story really dry. Fixie can't seem to take control of her life and she's stuck in this toxic relationship with Ryan. All the red flags were obviously there but it looks as though she's not leaving him anytime soon unless a guy, in this case Seb, was available. Also, can I just say, Seb was also in a relationship but only got around to being with Fixie right after breaking up with his s/o. Anyway, in the end, Seb and Fixie end up together. Besides the relationship issues she's facing, a lot is also going on in her personal life which was just too much for me.

I don't think there was a character development for Fixie. I mean, the least that Kinsella could do was to wake her up, leave Ryan and allow her to thrive alone. Maybe even let her open her own store. Not make her lean on another man.

I've seen other reviews on this book and there were a lot of people who were also let down by this story. But there were also those who enjoyed it. If you ask me, I wouldn't recommend it...unless you really wanna try it. After all, at the end of the day we all have different preferences.
